After the hex head breaks away, a smooth, tamper-resistant cone remains, making the nut difficult to grip or remove with standard tools. These shear nuts are intended for one-time installation. After the hex head breaks away, removal generally requires a grinder or other destructive removal method.

How Break-Away Nuts Work
Install the nut using a standard wrench or socket that fits the hexagonal head. As the nut is tightened, the upper hex section is designed to shear away at its predetermined breaking point. The remaining cone-shaped portion cannot be easily gripped with ordinary tools.
Because the head is intended to break away, these nuts are generally best suited for installations that do not require frequent removal or adjustment.
